Oral English (1)
Background knowledge for lesson one and lesson
four:
If your health problem is complicated, it is usually best to go to a doctor
you trust or someone has recommended. You should remember that medical services,
including dental work, in the U.S. are generally very expensive. Appointments
are made far in advance, but many doctors and dentists will try to fit you in
if you have an urgent problem. In the United States, many people subscribe to
private insurance companies for personal coverage. Some large companies and
Civil Service employers provide medical coverage for their employees.
Dialogue: At the Doctor's
Doctor: You said on the phone that you feel terrible. What's wrong?
Bob: I've had a terrible stomachache since Saturday night.
Doctor: Any other symptoms? Like diarrhea, nausea.
Bob; Yes, I also feel dizzy.
Doctor: Cay you think of anything you ate for Saturday dinner that might have
caused it?
Bob: All I can think of is the fish we had. It didn't taste right.
Doctor: then that might be it. Now normally how have you been feeling?
Bob: Well, I 've been feeling tired for quite sometime.
Doctor: Do you get much exercise?
Bob: As a matter of fact, I don't. And I think I smoke too much, too.
Doctor: Well, that explains why you feel tired. I'll give you some pills to
stop your stomach pain. I also recommend that you cut down on your smoking.
If you try to get more exercise, your feeling of tiredness will be gone in no
time.
Bob: Thank you, doctor.
Background knowledge for lesson two:
It is all right to make plans with friends at the last minute if you invite
them to party. It is more polite, however, to plan ahead of time.
Parties, shows and concerts are very popular. It is a good idea to buy tickets
in advance if you want to see a particular show or concert.
When going to a cocktail party, it is common to arrive ten minutes late and
leave twenty minutes before it is scheduled to end. If you wish to leave earlier,
you should at least stay for half an hour. On these occasions you should talk
for a few minutes to one person, then move on to talk to another one. Good topics
are weather, studies, jobs or what part of China you come from. Do not ask others
about their age and income. Questions about age and money are considered rude.
Background knowledge for lesson five:
Traveling is not only a source of pleasure for people these days; it is also
"big business'. In other words, lots of companies now exist simply to organize
holiday for people. They naturally make a lot of financial profit from this
type of business. Newspapers and magazines frequently have articles about different
types of holiday. They offer advice on how to select the best holidays, describe
different destination, suggest ways of traveling cheaply, comfortably and easily,
and recommend good place to stay. They also contain lots of advertisements for
different travel companies.
Oral practice of lesson five:

W: Have you got lots of information about travel?
M: We certainly have, madam.

M: What would you like, Madam? A weekend in Las Vegas?
W: Oh, no. I don't think my husband would let me do that.
M: Well, what do you want?
W: Do you have any interesting program for the two-day weekend?
M: Oh, yes. We have lots of interesting programs for the weekend. You certainly
don't seem to like a long trip, do you?
W: No, we don't. We feel tired after a week's work.
M: Then, what about St, Monica Beach? There you can swim, lie in the sun on
the soft sand and play beach volleyball.
W: Sounds nice. What about the price?
M: $ 200 each.
W: Good. But I have to talk to my husband first.
